UK Has Highest Rate Of Asbestos Deaths

According to research published in the prestigious British Journal of Cancer as many as one out of every seventeen British joiners who were born during the war years have all will die as a result of lung cancer related to inhaling asbestos.

The cancer known as mesothelioma is commonly found in workers who often spent a decade working with the dangerous substance before they even reached 30 years of age.

The cancer risk is not limited to joiners, although they were the workers who were in most contact with the asbestos. The report also points out that two in every 100 decorators, plumbers or electricians also will develop this long destroying cancer.

The problem is a serious one for British workers as the rate of death from mesothelioma is the world’s highest climbing over 1700 deaths during 2005. That is a massive one out of every 40 UK cancer deaths.

The asbestos related problems are also not limited to male workers, nearly 300 women died in 2005 from cancers related to asbestos in the workplace.

As such, it is extremely important that management and staff are aware of the dangers of potential toxic substances found in many types of work environments including seemingly safe workplaces such as offices. Bring your employees up-to-date, enrol them onto the nebosh general certificate from the health and safety training specialists at Workplace Law Training.
