I used to love playing against calling stations more than anybody at Everest. Those guys are hugely useful when you’ve got a monster hand; if you’re sure that your hand is the best one and you’ve got a calling station at your table, you’re just about guaranteed to cash in with that guy. The problem with those guys, however, is that you need to have a great hand to really cash in. My new favorite opponent is the loose player, the guy who will play hands of a varying degree of starting value, particularly ones who tend to overvalue their poker hands.
I’ve been up against a lot of these players lately, and I find that they’re great opponents for building up your stack. When you’ve got a player that you know will play low cards and will bet the house when he hits middle pair. These players encourage me to open up my game a bit; if I’m playing head’s up against one of these guys, I don’t mind putting a big stack of chips behind two pair, or even top pair, just on the basis that they’ll play hard with lesser poker hands.
Obviously, there are some risks involved-loose players do end up with huge hands on occasion, but those times seem to be few and far between. Use your best judgment when you play against loose players, and you’ll find that you can often beat them with hands that you’d fold against other players.

5 Thoughts on Pressure in Poker By B. Butler 1. Most hands in poker do not amount to the nuts. You might make a poker online hand you feel confident is the best, but given the proper pressure from the proper source, you will often fold. 2. You can’t apply constant pressure in all hands and be convincing. A player who applies pressure wily nily in each hand trying to take it down is called a maniac. Maniacs inevitably lose their money, if after swings. 3. Instead of applying constant pressure, you must apply the right kind of pressure in the right place at Everest Poker. This means having a good table image, where the players have seen that you aren’t a maniac, and that you are selective about your hands, but also are capable of betting solid. 4. The more frequently you apply pressures in the right places, the more hands you will win. In this way, information becomes as valuable as the cards themselves, as if you always knew when to bet against the right holdings that you could take it down, you would win every hand you played. 5. Poker, then, is both about timing and seeing, commodity and projection. Manifesting your image, milking it, and with the variance of making actual hands, you can in the long run show a profit.

For your consideration, I present to you my list of the top 5 poker and/or gambling movies of all time. 5. The Gambler, 1980. This was a made for TV movie, and mostly makes my top five because the movie features the famous and great Kenny Rogers song of the same name. 4. Stuey, 2003. This movie starts Michael Imperioli as Stu “The kid” Ungar, who many people, myself included, place atop the list of greatest poker player of all time. Some people don’t like this movie, but I think it’s an entertaining look at a fun and ultimately tragic figure. 3. California Split, 1974. A true hidden gem, this movie about two gin-soaked, down on their luck gamblers in Vegas should be required watching for any lover of poker or gambling in general. 2. The Cincinnati Kid, 1965. Probably the most famous and lauded of all gambling-themed movies. The star of this movie, Steve McQueen, is quite possibly the coolest dude of all time, and his turn as Eric Stoner is one of the awesomest performances of all time. 1. Rounders, 1998. Most cinephiles wouldn’t consider this a better movie than some that preceded it on this list, but for sheer influence this takes the top spot. Most people cite Chris Moneymaker’s 2003 WSOP win and the popularity of the hole-cam in televised poker online as the start of the 2000’s “poker boom.” However, this movie was the real start. Millions of people saw this movie and were immediately drawn to the exciting world of No Limit Texas Hold em.

I have been playing turbo six-max SNG online poker tournaments for over a year now. Whenever I play a SNG it is either turbo, or super turbo and six handed. I started doing some WSOP steps which are regular 10 minute blinds with nine poker players. This proved way too difficult for my current SNG temperament.
In the agony of 10 minute blinds and 9 handed play, I opened up my beginning game extremely wide. I would limp in almost anything because the table was so passive. I would call if the bets were small enough to the river and if checked to, I would make a large semi-bluff bet. I showed down a lot of random hands like J-3, 8-4, Q-7 suited and the like. On one hand I beat AK with K-3 of diamonds by hitting a flush.
This got people to start grumbling at the online poker table. I was below starting stack via this splashing method of play, but the blinds were so small, and there were no antes, so I knew that when the blinds got higher, I would be able to start shoving profitably.
I began shoving with 8 BBs and putting the fear into the players with mid stacks. Still, no one would look me up. Finally my time had come. I had about 900 chips and the blinds were 40/80. I was in the big blind with AA and it folded around to the button. He raised to 210. Even with this massive of a hand, I felt like my table image was loose enough that I was more likely to get doubled up preflop as opposed to letting him hit the flop and miss. So, I shove, and he calls with AJ. My image setup could not have been better. I’d double up and then be able to play short handed with high blinds at my usual pace.
Unfortunately a jack came on the flop and another on the turn. The plan worked perfectly; I could not have asked for a better situation.

Four eight is an interesting poker online hand to see people play, in that on its face it appears to be total garbage, and yet in certain situations it can be milked. I say this in extreme context, as certainly you’d never want to put much money at risk with a hand of this nature, and it would require a very specific and limited sort of scenario where this kind of hand could actually make money beyond the realms of pure brute force.
When you play a hand like 4 8 there are very few flops you can hope to see. Even flopping a straight with a board of 5 6 7 is suspect in that it remains vulnerable to more commonly played online poker hands like 8 9. In a situation like that you are going to lose all of your money. So essentially you are looking to flop a full house, at least trips, which is still also vulnerable in that better kickers and better full houses will also lose you all of your money.
When you do happen to flop major though, and you can go forth under the premise that your opponent doesn’t have one of those brain crushers, you can almost guarantee any bigger hand is going to pay you well, because it’s just not going to ever seem like you have anything. Still, this is all within the context of donkey logic, and better to just fold and wait for something more substantial, but still, we can prospect, can we not? Remember this when you’re visiting a casino online.

There’s been a raging debate over whether playing poker in and of itself is gambling. Well in the traditional sense, yes it is. You have to wager something of value, you are wagering on a specific outcome, and you get rewarded if you are correct.
But what I’m talking about is meta-level online poker. The difference between playing poker strategically or playing online poker on sheer gambling is astounding, and to say otherwise is a disrespect to the real players of the game.
That said, you can use these ideas of “gambling” vs. Playing poker, to choose your tables. And in turn, this will improve your chances of making your bankroll fatter.
Here are some tell-tale signs of how to tell how is a gambler and how is a poker player. If you see a player limping into nearly every pot, he’s most likely a gambler. He’s trying to catch cards, he wants to play and probably doesn’t understand the intrinsic value of being able to fold crap hands.
On the other hand, you may find players who play tight poker, you see them folding often, and when they do play their hands, they play them aggressively and try to extract maximum value. These players are poker players. I’m not going to make a guess as to whether or not they’re good or bad, but they are poker players and know the game.
The question you have to ask yourself at this point is whether or not you want to gamble or play. If you want to gamble, then by all means jump in there with the other gamblers and let the falling of the cards dictate what happens to your chipstack. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a solid game, solid scouting is always a necessity. This is even easier online as you can watch a table and find out how players play before ever sitting down, and you get to see more hands per hour.
That said, it’s your choice on how you wish to spend your chips, but if you’re reading this, there’s a pretty good chance you want to be a poker player and not just a “gambler,” and will act accordingly.

Texas Hold ‘Em poker online tournaments typically end with two players going one-on-one to decide the winner. Heads- up play brings increased focus on the finer aspects of poker - strategy, position, psychology, and stack size. Heads-up play can sharpen your poker skills and uncover the more subtle nuances of the game. Online poker is a great way to get practice at heads-up play because many online sites offer heads-up tournaments. When you play heads-up, you’ll discover exactly how rare it is to actually get a favorable flop, and it will force you to deploy and rely more on tactics than actual cards.
Online heads-up poker contests offer the opportunity for lots of practice because you’ll play more flops than in regular full-table games. It forces you to focus on your opponent and try to get a read on the hand you’re up against. In heads-up play, position becomes even more important for making aggressive bets. You will have to make decisions based on previous observations to understand how aggressive you need to be to get your opponent to fold. Newcomers to poker should take advantage of free heads-up play at online poker sites. It will sharpen your skills, and help develop a more aggressive style of play that you can bring to tables with many players.
