Four eight is an interesting poker online hand to see people play, in that on its face it appears to be total garbage, and yet in certain situations it can be milked. I say this in extreme context, as certainly you’d never want to put much money at risk with a hand of this nature, and it would require a very specific and limited sort of scenario where this kind of hand could actually make money beyond the realms of pure brute force.
When you play a hand like 4 8 there are very few flops you can hope to see. Even flopping a straight with a board of 5 6 7 is suspect in that it remains vulnerable to more commonly played online poker hands like 8 9. In a situation like that you are going to lose all of your money. So essentially you are looking to flop a full house, at least trips, which is still also vulnerable in that better kickers and better full houses will also lose you all of your money.
When you do happen to flop major though, and you can go forth under the premise that your opponent doesn’t have one of those brain crushers, you can almost guarantee any bigger hand is going to pay you well, because it’s just not going to ever seem like you have anything. Still, this is all within the context of donkey logic, and better to just fold and wait for something more substantial, but still, we can prospect, can we not? There’s been a raging debate over whether playing poker in and of itself is gambling. Well in the traditional sense, yes it is. You have to wager something of value, you are wagering on a specific outcome, and you get rewarded if you are correct.
But what I’m talking about is meta-level online poker. The difference between playing poker strategically or playing online poker on sheer gambling is astounding, and to say otherwise is a disrespect to the real players of the game.
That said, you can use these ideas of “gambling” vs. Playing poker, to choose your tables. And in turn, this will improve your chances of making your bankroll fatter.
Here are some tell-tale signs of how to tell how is a gambler and how is a poker player. If you see a player limping into nearly every pot, he’s most likely a gambler. He’s trying to catch cards, he wants to play and probably doesn’t understand the intrinsic value of being able to fold crap hands.
On the other hand, you may find players who play tight poker, you see them folding often, and when they do play their hands, they play them aggressively and try to extract maximum value. These players are poker players. I’m not going to make a guess as to whether or not they’re good or bad, but they are poker players and know the game.
The question you have to ask yourself at this point is whether or not you want to gamble or play. If you want to gamble, then by all means jump in there with the other gamblers and let the falling of the cards dictate what happens to your chipstack. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a solid game, solid scouting is always a necessity. This is even easier online as you can watch a table and find out how players play before ever sitting down, and you get to see more hands per hour.
That said, it’s your choice on how you wish to spend your chips, but if you’re reading this, there’s a pretty good chance you want to be a poker player and not just a “gambler,” and will act accordingly.

There are two uses of the word ‘freeroll’ in poker. One refers to poker tournaments that involved no buy in, in which casino players might compete for a small prize. The other use, the one that becomes present in the activity of a hand, refers to when two players remain in the pot, with alike or very similar hands, and though the odds are that they will chop the pot, one of the player has extra “outs” that might allow him to win the pot all by himself. The online poker player who can at worst chop the pot, and at best take it all down, is referred to as ‘freerolling.’
Here is an example of ‘freerolling’ in this kind of situation: two players have ace king. Player A’s AK is suited in hearts, while Player B’s is suited in diamonds. They end up all in before the flop, with the odds favorable that they will split the pot. The flop then comes down with two diamonds and one spade. Player A now has no chance to win the pot, and they will only chop it if a diamond does not come (giving Player B the flush). Player B is then freerolling. He can’t lose, but if a diamond comes, he takes it all.

Andy Bloch has recently become one of the most regularly deep running professional in the world of online poker, though his presence has been large in the gambling community for quite some time. Originally part of the MIT gambling unit that got caught counting cards in the famous scandal made legend on the bestselling book ‘Bringing Down the House,’ Bloch has risen to poker fame simply by his sheer intelligence for numbers and the ability to bend them to his advantage.
Bloch is somewhat of an anomaly in the poker circuit in that he doesn’t seem to have a definitive style or approach to the game, other than one that continually vibrates between pressure and weird rhythm. Bloch is a master at picking a spot and making that spot look like gold whether it actually stays gold or not, using his power poker skills to knock opponents off of their hands when his own doesn’t pan out.
Couple that with an overall very likable and well-seeming young man, fit with the MIT legend looming and his clear wit for the game, and you’ve got one rough aggressor. His recent win in the 2007 HORSE tournament over the late Chip Reese was only one among many tournament successes that have since cemented him in true poker greatness.

There are many vices I love in this world, but gambling and drinking are chief among them. So there are few places in the world I like being than Las Vegas.
With dozens of places to play poker, and free booze flowing at each table, it is a place where a person can spend many happy hours idling the time away.
I had occasion to be in Vegas recently, and it was just as good as I remembered. I walked the strip, ate and drank heartily, and most importantly won several hundred dollar playing poker.
There is no better feeling in the world, in my opinion, than sitting at a poker table in a casino and seeing the dealer shove a huge pile of chips across the felt in your direction. Whether you’ve just hit a huge hand, or made an incredible bluff, piling up those chips in front of you is fantastic.
And in Vegas, being the international tourist destination that it is, the odds are you are sitting at a table with folks from around the world. All of them playing, joking, having a good time, united by a common love of poker and decadence.
I only stayed in Vegas for a few days, but soaked up all the fun and can’t wait to go back. If you’re a poker player, it is a must-see and a place to play against some of the best players in the world.

Everyone is familiar with the old saying: “Practice makes perfect.” This is especially true when it comes to poker players since the art of poker combines probability skills, strategy, and luck. “Practice makes perfect” resonates well with a lot of high school students trying to earn a spot in top-notch universities, but this is especially more pronounced in the South Korean school system. “Cram schools” were developed so that students can prepare for their national college admission tests; however, these cram schools resemble training camps for war than a normal place of solitude for studying and higher education. Academia aside, I think the South Koreans are onto something here and can be applicable to poker.
For any aspiring poker prodigy, there should be poker institutions where they can hone their craft with other like-minded individuals. Think of it as a hybrid between a poker bootcamp and a school of sorts for the competitive poker player. With the advent of “poker schools” the level of competition should be raised thus yielding more intrinsic pleasure for true, diehard poker enthusiasts. In actuality such an institution would be very similar to a sports fantasy camp but for poker. Daily activities would include hours of continuous poker play, strenuous probability calculations, and mental toughness preparation, among other things. Everybody leaves the school stronger, faster, and smarter than ever before.
